The state of the planet · 2026 read-out

Science has mapped nine Planetary Boundaries — the conditions that have kept Earth stable enough for civilisation to flourish. Here each one is read out along a single ramp: from the green safe zone, across a hard line at the boundary, into the deep purple of mounting danger. Seven of the nine are now past their limit.
